The SouthCoast Insurance Agents Association hosted a very successful 2026 Annual Meeting last month on March 26th. The meeting was well attended with over 60 attendees joining us including four guest speakers, agents from eleven agencies, representatives from five company partners, six sponsors and our scholarship recipient. Our meeting started with the official Association business including the reading of the treasurer's report, electing a new slate of officers and welcoming two new members to the Association Board. We welcome you to review them here.
After official business concluded, the association was updated on important MAIA happenings and initiatives by President Nick Fyntrilakis over lunch. Finally we welcomed our esteemed panel of carrier partners, including Bill Hughes, the Vice President of Commercial Lines at Mapfre, Mike Abate the Vice President of MA Business Development at Arbella, and George MacKinnon the Vice President of Underwriting at Union Mutual. Each brought their professional expertise a series of questions about the 2026 market outlook, industry pressures and strategically planning for the future. Questions included:
As we enter a softer growth market in 2026, how are you balancing premium growth with underwriting discipline to avoid repeating past cycle mistakes?
How has the reinsurance market reshaped your risk appetite, particularly in CAT-exposed regions like Massachusetts?
Are technologies such as IoT water sensors, telematics, and predictive analytics delivering meaningful underwriting improvement?
Should loss control be more visible to insureds as part of the value proposition rather than remaining behind the scenes?
Do you view captive entry as a competitive threat, a market evolution, or both? What are your plans on competing with captives as they enter the market?
What differentiates a high-performing independent agency partner in a more competitive 2026 marketplace?
Looking ahead three years, what keeps you up at night—and where do you see the greatest opportunity for profitable growth?
The insights our speakers provided gave agents plenty to ruminate on and strategize for in the coming months. As the meeting concluded Association board members highlighted the next upcoming event, a roundtable on the evening of May 14th focused on new captive entries into Massachusetts and how agents can prepare.
